Microsoft akhirnya memperlihatkan generasi sistem operasi seterusnya iaitu Windows 8. Perubahan yang berbeza ditonjolkan berbanding sistem operasi terdahulu yang mana Windows 8 kelihatan seperti Windows Phone 7's Metro UI. Semua applikasi ditonjolkan dalam bentuk "tile" UI. Terdapat dua jenis applikasi untuk Windows 8 iaitu dekstop dan aplikasi mobil. Windows 8 dijangka akan menggunkaan pelayar versi baru Internet Explorer 10 dan memperkenalkan "app store" seperti yang terdapat pada Apple. Rekaan Windows 8 ini lebih tertumpu untuk penggunaan skrin sesentuh. Walaubagaimanapun Microsoft mengatakan sistem operasi Windows 8 akan digunakan untuk semua jenis laptop,tablet dan dekstop. Microsoft bakal memperkenalkan Windows 8 pada tahun hadapan.
